Ghafir 40:6
وَكَذَٰلِكَ حَقَّتْ كَلِمَتُ رَبِّكَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ أَنَّهُمْ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلنَّارِ
“And thus has the word [i.e., decree] of your Lord come into effect upon those who disbelieved that they are companions of the Fire.”
Saheeh International
Essence
As it came true for the nations before, your Lord's word comes true for those who deny: they are the Fire's companions.
A reflection
The only word that always comes true
Think of how many human words never arrive. Forecasts that miss. Promises made in campaigns and forgotten by spring. Threats that were bluster. Even sincere people say 'I will' and then cannot.
This ayah uses a verb for words that do arrive. Ḥaqqat: it came true, it became binding, it held. The root names what is firmly real. One lexicon pictures a door's pivot turning true in its socket. The desert gave it another image. A young camel entering its fourth year was a ḥiqq: now it could rightly bear a rider and a load. A word that ḥaqqat is a word that has become strong enough to carry its weight.
And it is a single word. Kalimatu rabbik: the word of your Lord, singular. One commentary says the word here is the very statement that follows: that they are the companions of the Fire. Another links it to His declaration that He will fill Hell (11:119). One sentence from Him, and it holds across every generation.
This is where human pride is quietly measured. The deniers of Makkah had plenty of words: mockery, plans, confident predictions of the new faith's collapse. They spoke as though they had the last word. The ayah answers with a verb. Their words came and went. His word came true.
We are not so different. Most of us talk about our futures as if our plans were final. I will finish this, I will be there, I will never. The Quran elsewhere teaches the believer to add: if Allah wills (18:23–24).
That is not timidity. It is accuracy. Only one Speaker's words are guaranteed to arrive. Everyone else is forecasting.
