Fussilat 41:20

“Until, when they reach it, their hearing and their eyes and their skins will testify against them of what they used to do.”

Essence

At the edge of the Fire the witnesses are no strangers: the ears, eyes and skin present at every deed speak of what was done.

A reflection

"I accept no witness but from myself"

In Sahih Muslim, a Companion describes the Prophet ﷺ laughing one day, and asking his Companions whether they knew why. He then described a scene on the Day of Judgement. A servant argues with his Lord. Have You not promised to protect me from injustice? Allah says: yes. Then, the servant says, I will accept no witness against myself except one from myself.

He is granted exactly what he asked. His mouth is sealed, and his limbs are told to speak. They speak of his deeds. When his tongue is released, he turns on his own body: away with you, and be gone. It was for your sake that I was arguing.

The Prophet ﷺ laughed at the irony, and it is worth sitting with. The man trusted no one but himself. He thought his own self would be his loyal defence. Instead, the self he trusted was the witness that ended his case.

One commentary adds why this happens: so that the person is left without any excuse from himself. A common doubt asks why an all-knowing God would need witnesses at all. The hadith answers it. Allah needs none. The testimony is for the one who insists, to the end, that he was wronged.

Picture a warehouse worker who disputes a disciplinary letter about his timekeeping. He refuses the manager's notes and the supervisor's account. Use only my own swipe-card record, he says; that is the only thing I trust. The card record is printed. It shows every late arrival, to the minute.

That is the shape of this ayah. Nobody will be convicted on someone else's word. The evidence will come from the ears that listened, the eyes that looked, the skin that touched. Is there anything you would not want your own body to say? The time to change it is while your tongue is still your own.
