Az-Zalzalah 99:4

يَوْمَئِذٍ تُحَدِّثُ أَخْبَارَهَا

“That Day, it will report its news”

Saheeh International

Essence

The ground you walk on sees what you are when no one is looking, and on that Day it will tell, in detail, what it saw.

A reflection

What the night cleaner knows

In a large office, the night cleaner knows things the chief executive never will. She knows who leaves half-eaten food for others to clear. She knows who says thank you and who looks through her. She knows who stays late to finish someone else's work, and who stays late to cry in the stairwell. She sees everyone after the performance is over.

The ayah says the earth will 'tell her news': tuḥaddithu akhbārahā. The Prophet ﷺ once recited it and asked, 'Do you know what her news is?' His Companions said Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: her news is that she will testify against every man and woman about what they did on her back. She will say: he did this and this, on such and such a day (al-Tirmidhi, who called it ḥasan; another grading considers its chain weak).

The word akhbār is sharper than 'news'. The lexicons say its root is knowing a thing from within, as you know someone by testing them. The Arabs set a person's makhbar, what he turns out to be when tried, against his manẓar, how he looks. The Quran uses akhbār in exactly that sense: 'We will test you... and We will test your akhbār' (47:31), your true state.

So the earth will not report our manẓar: the profile photo, the job title, the reputation. It will report our makhbar: what we were on her surface when it counted. And the verb is tuḥaddithu, form II, which means telling at length, piece after piece.

The night cleaner rarely says anything. But if she were ever asked, she could tell a truer story about that office than its annual report. The earth has been the night cleaner of every life. It has been present at every hour, and it was never performed for.

It is worth asking, quietly, what the floors and pavements of your week would say. Not to frighten yourself, but to close the distance between how you look and what you are.
