Al-Fath 48:8
إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَـٰكَ شَـٰهِدًا وَمُبَشِّرًا وَنَذِيرًا
“Indeed, We have sent you as a witness and a bringer of good tidings and a warner”

Essence
Allah names the Prophet's role in three words: one who was there and will testify, one who brings joy, and one who warns.
A reflection
Present, knowing, and saying so
A shāhid is not someone who heard about it. The root joins three things: being present, knowing, and making known. The Arabs called the tongue al-shāhid, because it tells what the eye saw. A wife was mushhid when her husband was at home. Presence comes first, and the telling grows out of it.
So when Allah says We have sent you as a witness, He names a man who was there. There for what? The commentaries give two answers, and they sit together well.
First, he witnesses over his community. He will testify that he delivered the message, and to how they answered it. The Quran says the Messenger will be a witness over you (2:143). One classical commentary adds a fine distinction. He witnesses their deeds today, and he will bear witness over them on the Day.
Second, one theological commentary prefers a deeper reading. The Prophet ﷺ is first a witness to the truth itself: that there is no god but Allah. Allah bears witness to it, and so do the angels and those with knowledge (3:18). The prophets stand at the front of that line. They were taught from Him what no one could reach alone.
Think of the last villager who still remembers where the old well stood. The valley was flooded for a reservoir decades ago. Surveyors, historians and heirs all come to her door. Not because she is clever, but because she was there. Her word carries a weight that no map can.
The Prophet's witness carries that weight twice over. He received the revelation himself. He knows what was asked of his people, because he lived it before he asked it of them.
That is why his witness is not cold. A witness who was present cares about the outcome. He stood among the very people he will one day testify about. He spent his life trying to make that testimony a good one.
