Al-Hujurat 49:15
“The believers are only the ones who have believed in Allāh and His Messenger and then doubt not but strive with their properties and their lives in the cause of Allāh. It is those who are the truthful.”

Essence
True faith stays steady over the years and proves itself by what it gives, like a spear shaft that does not snap when tested.
A reflection
A doubt that passes is not a doubt that stays
A young woman is in the middle of her prayer when a thought arrives uninvited: what if none of this is true? It frightens her. She finishes the prayer shaking and tells no one. She has read that true believers did not doubt. Perhaps she is not one of them.
The ayah does say thumma lam yartābū: then they did not doubt. The lexicons give the root of that verb a vivid picture. It is the rope of a bucket jerking in a well, warning the drawer that something is wrong below. It is a restless, uneasy mind. One commentator adds that the form used means falling into doubt mixed with suspicion of the one you had trusted.
But look at how the commentators read then. One explains it like this. A person may believe and find their heart cool and settled. Then Shaytan, or someone who misleads, throws something at them that dents their certainty. Or they reason badly and stumble into doubt. The fault he describes is the one who then keeps riding that doubt, stubbornly, without seeking any way out. The true believers are those who did not settle into it.
Sahih Muslim records that some Companions came to the Prophet ﷺ troubled. We find things in ourselves, they said, that each of us would think too terrible to speak of. He asked: you have really felt that? Yes. That, he said, is clear faith.
The Companions' distress at the thought was itself the sign of faith. A heart that recoils from a doubt is not a doubting heart.
So the woman need not stop praying, or conclude she has failed. The thought came. She hated it. She turns back to Allah and asks Him for steadiness. That turning is the very thing the ayah describes.
