Al-Hujurat · Madani · ayah 18 of 18
Al-Hujurat 49:18
“Indeed, Allāh knows the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth. And Allāh is Seeing of what you do.”

Essence
Every manner this surah teaches is finally kept or broken where no one else is watching, and that is exactly where Allah sees.
A reflection
The fish at the bottom of the trench
A research ship lowers a camera eight kilometres into an ocean trench. The lights come on. A pale fish drifts across the screen, a kind no human eye has ever seen. Its ancestors have lived in that dark for longer than there have been people to wonder about them.
The last ayah of the surah says: inna Allāha yaʿlamu ghayba al-samāwāti wa-al-arḍ, Allah knows the unseen of the heavens and the earth. Not only what is in them, as the ayah before said, but what is hidden in them. One early commentator describes it: whatever is concealed in the hidden recesses of the heavens and the earth, nothing of it escapes Him.
That fish was never unknown. It was only unknown to us. The camera did not reveal it to the world; it revealed it to us. Every trench, every unexplored valley, every corner of every galaxy, is already fully known, and always was.
This is where the ego shrinks to its proper size. Human knowledge, however impressive, is a small lit circle in an enormous dark. We celebrate each new discovery, rightly. But each one is a glimpse of something Allah has known all along.
The ayah then turns from the cosmos to us. Wa-Allāhu baṣīrun bi-mā taʿmalūn: and Allah sees what you do. The same knowledge that holds the deep-sea fish in view holds our ordinary afternoons.
The tribesmen in the previous ayat were trying to manage how they were seen. The surah closes by reminding them of the One who sees everything, including what they were managing. In front of that gaze, the only sensible posture is humility. Pride, the urge to be seen as more than we are, has nowhere left to hide.
