Al-Hujurat 49:4

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يُنَادُونَكَ مِن وَرَآءِ ٱلْحُجُرَٰتِ أَكْثَرُهُمْ لَا يَعْقِلُونَ

“Indeed, those who call you, [O Muḥammad], from behind the chambers - most of them do not use reason.”

Essence

They shouted through a wall built to hold people back, because nothing inside them held them back: a picture of cleverness without restraint.

A reflection

Our praise adorns, our blame disgraces

It was the middle of the day. The Prophet ﷺ was resting in the room of one of his wives. A delegation from the tribe of Tamim had arrived in Madinah, among them some of the proudest men in Arabia.

They did not wait. The commentaries preserve reports that they went from room to room calling out: Muḥammad, come out to us. One of them added a line that tells you exactly how they saw the world. My praise is an adornment, he shouted, and my blame is a disgrace.

Al-Tirmidhi records the Prophet's ﷺ reply, and grades the narration ḥasan gharīb. That is Allah. Only Allah's praise adorns, and only His blame disgraces.

It is a remarkable exchange. The man was not threatening violence. He was threatening something he thought was more powerful: his tongue. In that culture, a poet's verse could raise a tribe or ruin it for generations. He was offering a deal. Treat us well and we will praise you; slight us and we will make you a byword.

The answer dismantles the whole economy. Human praise and human blame are not the currency that counts. There is only one opinion that can truly raise or lower a person, and it is not on offer for bargaining.

Then the ayah came down. It does not name the man or the tribe. It describes them by what they did: those who call to you from behind the rooms. And it gives its verdict in four words: most of them do not reason.

Every age has its own version of the delegation. Today it is the follower count, the review score, the threat of a public post. The ayah's answer has not changed. That is Allah.
