Qaf 50:17

إِذْ يَتَلَقَّى ٱلْمُتَلَقِّيَانِ عَنِ ٱلْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ ٱلشِّمَالِ قَعِيدٌ

“When the two receivers [i.e., recording angels] receive,[1529] seated on the right and on the left.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Two recorders sit with every person, one at each side, taking in what he sends out, while his Lord is nearer still.

A reflection

Nearest at the very moment they write

A husband checks his wife's location on his phone every hour. He tells himself it is love. It is fear. He watches because he cannot trust, and he cannot trust because he does not truly know her.

Some people read this ayah and picture that husband, magnified. Two watchers posted beside every human, one on each side. Is this a Lord who needs control?

Read it in its place, and it says the opposite. The ayah begins with idh, when. Several classical commentaries tie it straight back to the line before. We are nearer to him than his jugular vein, at the very time the two receivers receive.

So the recorders do not replace His attention. They sit inside it. One commentary draws the picture of a king who appoints scribes over a matter. A careless king leans on his scribes and stops watching. This King is nearer than the vein even while the scribes write. What might escape them does not escape Him.

Then why appoint them at all? The commentaries answer plainly. He has no need of them. They are appointed to establish the proof, so the record can be laid open on the day the witnesses stand. And, one adds, so the servant who knows of them is helped to hold back from evil.

That is the difference from the husband. Surveillance grows out of need, ignorance and fear. These recorders come from a Lord who lacks nothing. He does not watch because He doubts. He arranges a record because He is just, and wants your own page in your hand.

The ego finds this hard to accept. We like to think our affairs are too small, or too private, to be anyone's concern. The ayah answers both. Your life is attended by noble creatures, and its Lord is nearer than they are.

Pride wants to be unwatched. Humility is glad to be known, because it has stopped pretending.
