Qaf 50:23

وَقَالَ قَرِينُهُۥ هَـٰذَا مَا لَدَىَّ عَتِيدٌ

“And his companion, [the angel], will say, "This [record] is what is with me, prepared."”

Saheeh International

Essence

The companion yoked to you all your life steps forward and says: here it is, everything I hold, ready, with nothing added and nothing missing.

A reflection

Roped neck to neck with someone you cannot see

At a school sports day, two nine-year-olds have their ankles tied together for the three-legged race. They wobble, fall and laugh. Then one of them takes charge, counting out loud, and they start to run. Whoever sets the rhythm decides where the pair ends up.

The ayah's speaker is qarīnuhu, his companion. The lexicons give the root a plain picture. The qaran was the plaited rope that coupled two ploughing bulls, so that neither could go its own way. A small quiver only counted as a qarn once it was slung with the bow. A qarīn is whatever is joined to you and goes where you go.

Who is this companion? The commentaries record more than one answer. Many say the recording angel assigned to the person, now presenting his record. Others say the angel who drove him to the gathering. A third view says it is the devil assigned to him. They point to another ayah: whoever turns from the remembrance of the Most Merciful, We assign him a devil as a companion (43:36).

Sahih Muslim joins the two pictures. The Prophet ﷺ said that every one of you has been assigned a companion from the jinn. In one narration he adds: and a companion from the angels. They asked: you too, Messenger of Allah? He said: me too, but Allah helped me against him, and he submitted.

So every human walks through life roped to two unseen partners, one pulling towards good and one away from it. On the Day, the companion steps forward and speaks.

The question for now is the three-legged race. Which companion sets your rhythm? Each choice you make is a step counted out loud, and one of them is learning to lead.
