Qaf 50:30

يَوْمَ نَقُولُ لِجَهَنَّمَ هَلِ ٱمْتَلَأْتِ وَتَقُولُ هَلْ مِن مَّزِيدٍ

“On the Day We will say to Hell, "Have you been filled?" and it will say, "Are there some more,"”

Saheeh International

Essence

Asked if it is full, Hell answers 'Is there more?', and we are told of it now so that none need fill it.

A reflection

Even the Fire answers when He speaks

Everything people fear in this world answers to something greater. The largest storm is a pattern of pressure and heat. The cruellest tyrant has a pulse that will one day stop. But the Fire is the end of fear itself, the place every warning in the Quran points towards.

And in this ayah, it is spoken to. Naqūlu, We say. One classical commentator notes that the plural here is the plural of majesty. The Lord addresses Hell as a master addresses a servant, asking for its report. And Hell answers.

The Prophet ﷺ described what follows. Hell keeps saying 'Is there more?' until the Lord of Might places His foot in it. Then its parts draw together and it says: enough, enough, by Your might (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim). Even the Fire swears by His might.

The hadith speaks of the foot, and this entry quotes it as narrated. Sunni scholars have handled such wording in more than one way. Some affirm it as it came, without asking how; others read it as His command subduing the Fire. What no reading disputes is the scene. The most terrible thing in creation falls still at His word.

Now set the human ego beside that. In another narration the Fire says it has been given the arrogant and the tyrants (Sahih al-Bukhari). The very people who made others tremble are the ones it receives. Pride that would not bow to Allah ends inside a creature that bows to Him at once.

Does the scene sound like a ruler showing off his dungeon? Notice who is told about it, and when. It is told to us now, while we can still choose, so that nobody need enter it. A ruler who wanted only to punish would keep his dungeon secret.

The humble reader takes the hint. If the Fire answers when He speaks, a human heart can answer too, and far sooner.
