Qaf 50:35

لَهُم مَّا يَشَآءُونَ فِيهَا وَلَدَيْنَا مَزِيدٌ

“They will have whatever they wish therein, and with Us is more.”

Saheeh International

Essence

In Paradise every wish is met, and still Allah says He holds more: a gift beyond anything His servants knew how to ask for.

A reflection

The child who asked for a sticker

They will have whatever they wish therein. Most of us would stop there and call it the greatest promise imaginable. The ayah does not stop. And with Us is more.

The first half puts the human will at the centre. Whatever they wish. The second half quietly moves it aside. There is something beyond their wishing, and it is held with Us. The classical commentators describe it as what never crossed their minds and what their hopes never reached, until they could not even want it.

Picture a grandfather who has saved for months to buy his grandson something special for Eid. He asks the five-year-old what he would like. The boy thinks hard and asks for a sticker. A dinosaur sticker. The grandfather smiles, and the next morning gives him the sticker and a bicycle. The boy did not ask for a bicycle. He had not yet imagined that he could.

That gap is the size of human desire next to divine generosity. We think we know what we want. Our pride is often invested in that knowledge. We plan our happiness, picture it and pursue it. Yet our wishes are measured by our experience, and our experience is small. The ego is humbled to discover that its biggest dream was a sticker.

One theological commentator draws the point from a single word, ladaynā: with Us. The greatness of the One with whom a thing is kept shows how great the thing must be. A gift held in a king's own treasury is not an ordinary gift.

The Prophet ﷺ reported that Allah says: I have prepared for My righteous servants what no eye has seen and no ear has heard. It has never occurred to a human heart. Al-Bukhari and Muslim both report it. The ayah's more lives in that last phrase. Not only unseen and unheard, but unimagined.

To stand before that is to drop the arrogance of thinking we know the limits of good. Humility here is not loss. It is the beginning of receiving.
