Qaf 50:36
“And how many a generation before them did We destroy who were greater than them in [striking] power and had explored throughout the lands. Is there any place of escape?”
Saheeh International
Essence
Nations with a firmer grip than ours bored through the earth for a way out; one question hangs over every age: was there any escape?
A reflection
The grip that was opened
At the end of a seaside pier stands an old arcade machine. You squeeze a steel handle, and a column of lights climbs towards one word: Champion. A broad-shouldered man grips it, jaw clenched, until every light flashes. His friends cheer. He walks away flexing his hand.
The ayah has a word for exactly that hand. Baṭsh is a seizing. The lexicons picture a hand that shoots out, closes and does not let go. The generations before Quraysh, the ayah says, were ashaddu minhum baṭshan: stronger than them in that grip. Their hold on land, trade and people was firmer than anything Makkah had.
Then one short verb settles it. Ahlaknā, We destroyed. Not 'they declined'. Not 'history moved on'. We.
This is where the ego has to sit down. Every age believes its grip is the strongest yet. Our machines are bigger and our reach is wider, so surely we are different. The ayah does not argue the point. It simply counts: kam, how many. It leaves the number open, as though no counting could finish.
A hadith in both Sahihs shows the other side of the grip. Allah gives the wrongdoer time, the Prophet ﷺ said, and when He seizes him He does not let him go. Then he recited: 'Such is the seizing of your Lord' (11:102). Human grips weaken with age. His does not loosen.
Why would Allah tell us this at all? Not to be admired by people about to perish. He needs no applause from ruins. The telling is for the hearer who still has time. A warning is the opposite of vanity, because it is spoken for the sake of the one warned.
So when your hold on life feels firm, remember the pier. The lights climbed for a moment. Then they reset to zero for the next hand.
