Qaf 50:41

وَٱسْتَمِعْ يَوْمَ يُنَادِ ٱلْمُنَادِ مِن مَّكَانٍ قَرِيبٍ

“And listen on the Day when the Caller[1532] will call out from a place that is near -”

Saheeh International

Essence

The Prophet ﷺ is told to listen now for the call that will wake every grave and reach each ear as if from close by.

A reflection

Listening on purpose, before the sound arrives

Istamiʿ is not the plain verb for hearing. It is form VIII of the root, and it carries intent. It means hearing on purpose, bending the attention towards a sound. The same form asks believers to listen when the Quran is recited (7:204). Hearing happens to you. Listening is something you do. A few ayat earlier the surah praised the one who lends an ear while present (50:37). Here the ear is turned towards what has not yet come.

The first hearers knew a homely picture from this root. The great leather well-bucket had a loop at its middle called its misamʿ, its ear. A rope through that ear kept the bucket level as it rose. A poet boasted that his people straightened whoever leaned, as a bucket is straightened by its ear. Hearing, in that picture, is what keeps a thing upright.

Notice that the command comes before the event. The call has not sounded, and the Prophet ﷺ is told to listen for it. One commentator reads the verb with no object at all: be a listener, not one of the heedless. Another reads it as: listen to what I am telling you of that Day.

Picture a cardiologist with a new patient. She closes her eyes and presses the stethoscope to his chest. The ward is noisy: trolleys, a ringing phone, a television. She hears all of it and listens to none of it. She is waiting for one faint murmur, and because she is waiting, she catches it.

The ayah asks for that posture towards the Last Day. Not a vague awareness that it exists somewhere. A listening that has already chosen what it waits for, so that the rest of life's noise cannot drown it.

The heedless will hear the call too. Hearing is not optional that Day. What the ayah offers is the chance to have listened first, so that the sound arrives as something awaited rather than a shock.
