Adh-Dhariyat 51:40

فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُ وَجُنُودَهُۥ فَنَبَذْنَـٰهُمْ فِى ٱلْيَمِّ وَهُوَ مُلِيمٌ

“So We took him and his soldiers and cast them into the sea, and he was blameworthy.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The king who called himself lord most high was seized with his army and flung into the sea like a worn-out sandal.

A reflection

Flung away like a worn sandal

Three verbs, one after another, and all of them Allah's. Fa-akhadhnāhu: so We seized him. Wa-junūdahu: and his soldiers. Fa-nabadhnāhum: and We flung them.

The last verb is the humbling one. Nabadha is to throw something from your hand, and it is not a neutral throw. The lexicons explain it as casting a thing off because it counts for little, as one flings away a worn-out sandal. A baby abandoned by the road was called manbūdh. The lexicons establish this picture. One commentary says exactly this here: We cast them off, paying them no regard.

Now remember who is being flung. This is the man who said to his people: I am your lord most high (79:24). One classical scholar recalls that claim at this very point. Another commentary says the ayah shows two things at once: the utter greatness of Allah's power, and the utter smallness of Pharaoh and his people.

That contrast is where the ego shrinks. Pharaoh had built an identity out of armies, palaces and titles. In the end, all of it was tossed into the water like an old shoe. The size of the claim made the fall look smaller still.

Picture a man who for twenty years insists on his title at every gathering, his framed awards lining the hallway. After a scandal, the company quietly removes his portrait from the boardroom wall. A cleaner carries it out to a skip, under one arm, along with the broken chairs.

Someone may ask: is this a God who delights in humiliating people? The ayah answers with its last phrase. Pharaoh was mulīm: he had done what earns blame. He was not cast off for being weak. He was cast off for claiming to be what only Allah is. Allah needs no one's humiliation (35:15). But He will not let a false lord stand.
