At-Tur 52:26

قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا كُنَّا قَبْلُ فِىٓ أَهْلِنَا مُشْفِقِينَ

“They will say, "Indeed, we were previously among our people fearful [of displeasing Allāh].”

Saheeh International

Essence

In the Garden they look back and name the secret: at home, where everyone else relaxed, their hearts stayed tender and watchful before Allah.

A reflection

Watchful in the one place everyone relaxes

The people of the Garden turn to one another and ask how they got there. The answer they give is surprising. Not 'we fasted', not 'we gave'. They say: we used to be mushfiqīn among our families.

Why mention the family at all? A scholar of the inner life gave a striking answer. Home is the place of safety. Among parents, children and kin, people let their guard down. These people were watchful in exactly the place where nobody needed to be. And that watchfulness, he said, carried them to Allah's favour, so they became safe from what they feared.

Another commentator drew the logical step. If they were apprehensive even among their families, where everyone feels secure, how much more at other times and in other places.

The same scholar then set this ayah beside another. In Surah al-Inshiqaq, the one who receives his record behind his back 'was among his family, joyful' (84:13). One was joyful while doing wrong. The other was apprehensive while doing good. So Allah exchanged their states. He turned the apprehension into the greatest safety, and the careless safety into the greatest fear.

Picture Eid afternoon. The house is full of cousins, plates and noise. A private tutor sits on the sofa with a cup of tea, perfectly content. Then she remembers. Last week she billed a family for a lesson she herself cancelled. Nobody would ever notice. She slips into the hallway, opens her banking app and sends the money back with a short apology. Then she returns to the noise, lighter.

That small moment is what it looks like to be mushfiq among one's people. It is not gloom at a celebration. It is a conscience that does not take a holiday when life is comfortable.

It also turns the usual danger around. Most people grow careless when they feel safe. The people of the Garden were the ones who stayed awake at the very moment the world told them to rest.
