At-Tur 52:27
فَمَنَّ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْنَا وَوَقَىٰنَا عَذَابَ ٱلسَّمُومِ
“So Allāh conferred favor upon us and protected us from the punishment of the Scorching Fire.”
Saheeh International
Essence
After a lifetime of watchfulness, they do not say 'we earned it': they say Allah favoured us and shielded us from the scorching wind.
A reflection
A favour, not a wage
The previous ayah gave the people of the Garden every reason to boast. They had been watchful all their lives, even at home where everyone else relaxed. Now comes the result, and they do not say 'so we earned it'. They say fa-manna Allāhu ʿalaynā: so Allah conferred a favour upon us.
The root of manna carries weight. The lexicons describe a minna as a favour so great that it weighs on the one who receives it, given freely and unasked. It is the opposite of a wage, which is owed. One commentator explained it in plain words: He gave to us as a charity, and gave us refuge from what we feared.
The Prophet ﷺ said something that matches their words exactly. Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim record it: no one's deeds will save him. The Companions asked, not even you, Messenger of Allah? He said: not even me, unless Allah covers me with mercy.
Picture a woman who worked for years to get into medical school. Night classes, re-sits, a part-time job in a care home. She is finally accepted. Years later, as a qualified doctor, she learns something. The admissions panel had been split on her application, and one tutor argued for her until the others agreed. She had done the work. But the door opened because someone chose to open it.
The people of the Garden see their lives the same way. Their watchfulness was real. Their prayers were real. But they know what made the difference. It was not their fear that pulled them out of the Fire. It was His favour.
There is freedom in speaking like this. A person who thinks he earned everything must keep proving it, and fears losing it. A person who knows he was favoured can rest in gratitude. The Garden, in this ayah, is full of people talking that way.
