At-Tur 52:28
إِنَّا كُنَّا مِن قَبْلُ نَدْعُوهُ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْبَرُّ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
“Indeed, we used to supplicate[1556] Him before. Indeed, it is He who is the Beneficent, the Merciful."”
Saheeh International
Essence
They called on Him all their lives, and they knew why: because He is the Kind One whose goodness has no edges, the Merciful.
A reflection
It was never your eloquence
The people of the Garden end their story in an unexpected place. They have just said: we used to call upon Him. A proud person would stop there, as if the calling had done the work. They go on: innahu huwa al-Barr al-Raḥīm. Indeed He, He alone, is the Most Kind, the Merciful.
The repeated 'He' matters. The reason they were saved is located in Allah's nature, not in their requests. Their prayers did not create His kindness. His kindness is why their prayers were answered at all.
What is al-Barr? One Companion explained it as al-Laṭīf, the Subtle and Gentle. Others said: truthful in His promise. Another commentator said: the One who does good. The lexicons give the root a wide range: goodness that spreads into every kind of good, and truthfulness that keeps its word. One classical derivation pictures the barr, the open land, wide and firm under the feet of a traveller stepping off a boat. That derivation is one view, not the only one. But it fits: a goodness with room in it.
Picture a tenant who spends an evening drafting a careful letter to her landlord. She asks for the rent to be frozen through a hard winter. She is pleased with her arguments. A week later she discovers that he froze the rent for every flat in the building. He had decided before her letter arrived. He is simply that kind of man.
Her letter was not wasted. It was the right thing to do, and he was glad of it. But it was not her eloquence that moved him.
This is where the ego has to bow. It is tempting to believe that our worship persuaded Allah, that our pleading earned His attention. The people of the Garden know better. They called because He is kind. He answered because He is kind. Pride has nothing left to hold.
