At-Tur 52:29
فَذَكِّرْ فَمَآ أَنتَ بِنِعْمَتِ رَبِّكَ بِكَاهِنٍ وَلَا مَجْنُونٍ
“So remind, [O Muḥammad], for you are not, by the favor of your Lord, a soothsayer or a madman.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Keep reminding: the labels they throw at you, soothsayer and madman, do not stick, because your Lord's favour is on you.
A reflection
Stay on the message when they attack the messenger
The ayah begins with a command and only then answers the insults. Fa-dhakkir: so remind. The order is the strategy.
One concise commentary explained the command as 'keep on reminding the idolaters'. Do not turn back from it, it added, because they call you a soothsayer or a madman. Another wrote: stand firm in reminding people and admonishing them. Do not let their talk of soothsaying and madness slow you down. Pay it no attention, for it is false.
This is a familiar pattern whenever a message is inconvenient. Opponents rarely engage the content. They attack the person. They give him a label that makes listening unnecessary. Once someone is filed as 'mad' or 'a fortune-teller', nobody has to answer his argument.
The ayah refuses that trap in two moves. First, keep going: the reminding continues. Second, a short, calm denial: you are not what they say. There is no long self-defence, no counter-insult. The energy stays on the work.
Picture a mother who wants a pedestrian crossing outside her children's primary school. At the first council meeting she shows a photograph of a near-miss. A councillor rolls his eyes. By the third meeting she is 'that woman' in the corridor. She does not argue about the nickname. She brings the same photograph, with the same calm summary, to every meeting for two years. The crossing is installed in the third spring.
She won because she never let the conversation become about her. Each time, she put the issue back on the table.
For anyone carrying a message that people do not want to hear, at work, in a family, in a community, this ayah is a pattern. Expect the labels. Answer them briefly if at all. Then return to the reminder, again and again, because that is the task. The labels fade. The reminder outlasts them.
