Al-Qamar · Makki · ayah 12 of 55
Al-Qamar 54:12
وَفَجَّرْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ عُيُونًا فَٱلْتَقَى ٱلْمَآءُ عَلَىٰٓ أَمْرٍ قَدْ قُدِرَ
“And caused the earth to burst with springs, and the waters met for a matter already predestined.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The ground they built on became a field of springs, rising to meet the rain, in exactly the measure He had set.
A reflection
The whole earth became springs
A couple spends a fortune converting their basement into a bright family room. Underfloor heating, oak boards, a large television. One winter, after a week of heavy rain, they come downstairs to find the new floor dark and wet. The water has not come through the roof or the windows. It has come up from the ground beneath them.
We tend to treat the ground as the one thing that stays put. We buy it, build on it, dig foundations into it, and forget it. The ego quietly assumes the earth under its feet is inert property.
The ayah says: wa-fajjarnā al-arḍa ʿuyūnan. Several commentators linger on how it is phrased. It does not say "We made the springs of the earth burst". It says, in effect, We made the earth burst as springs. One explains that this makes the whole earth seem to be bursting springs. A classical theologian notes that the plainer phrasing would be true if three springs opened. This phrasing leaves no ground dry. One commentary reports that even the ovens, the places of fire, gushed water (11:40).
That is the scale of power in a single verb. The ground under every house, field and palace became water at His word.
It humbles a proud heart. Every estate agent's plan, every boundary wall, every inheritance argument over a few metres of land rests on ground that answers to Another. Arrogance about property is arrogance standing on water that has not yet been called.
Is this Allah displaying His might for its own sake? The context answers. This was the answer to a man who had cried "I am overpowered" after centuries of mockery. Allah needs no admiration from anyone. He is free of all need (35:15). When He shows His power here, it is to vindicate the weak and to tell the arrogant that the ground they boast of is His.
Stand on bare ground for a moment today. Remember Whose it is.
