Al-Qamar 54:10
فَدَعَا رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنِّى مَغْلُوبٌ فَٱنتَصِرْ
“So he invoked his Lord, "Indeed, I am overpowered, so help."”
Saheeh International
Essence
After nine and a half centuries of calling, Nuh's whole prayer is three words: I am overpowered, so help.
A reflection
The shortest prayer in the story
A man who runs a small building firm sits in his van outside the bank. The loan has been refused. Wages are due on Friday. He has rehearsed every argument, every spreadsheet, every plan. Now there is nothing left to plan. He puts his forehead on the steering wheel and says out loud, to no one in the van: I'm beaten. You do it.
That is almost exactly the shape of Nuh's prayer. Annī maghlūbun fa-ntaṣir. In Arabic it is three words. I am overpowered; so help.
There is no long preamble. No list of his achievements, no review of the centuries he had spent calling them, no catalogue of their crimes. One commentator paraphrases it plainly: my people have overcome me, they have rebelled and gone too far, and I have no strength against them. Another adds that he prayed this only when his people would not listen to him and despair of their answering had taken hold.
We often think of powerful prayer as eloquent prayer. Long, polished, full of beautiful phrases. The Quran keeps showing the opposite. Some of its most powerful prayers are short and raw. Ayyub: harm has touched me (21:83). Musa: my Lord, I am in need of whatever good You send down to me (28:24). And Nuh: I am overpowered.
What makes them powerful is honesty. A person stops pretending to have things under control and tells the truth to the only One who can change it.
One commentator notes the emphatic "indeed I" at the start. He says the emphasis is there to press the plea for mercy all the more. It is the voice of someone leaning his full weight on the door.
There may be a situation in your life where you have done everything you can. You have planned, argued, tried and retried. Perhaps tonight the right prayer is not a longer one. Perhaps it is these three words, said honestly: I am overpowered, so help.
