Al-Qamar 54:14

تَجْرِى بِأَعْيُنِنَا جَزَآءً لِّمَن كَانَ كُفِرَ

“Sailing under Our observation as reward for he who had been denied.”

Saheeh International

Essence

In a drowned world with no one left to admire him, Nuh sailed under the only gaze that mattered, repaid in full for every rejection.

A reflection

Seen by no one, watched by Him

A teenager posts a short video and checks it every ten minutes. Forty views. Then sixty. A friend has two thousand. By midnight the number has decided her mood. Somewhere inside, the ego has learned to measure its worth by how many eyes are on it.

Now picture Nuh on the ark. The world he knew is under water. There is no crowd, no audience, nobody left to admire the ship he spent years building. On every side, empty grey sea.

And the ayah says: tajrī bi-aʿyuninā. It sailed under Our eyes. The commentaries explain it as in Our sight and under Our protection and care. A classical theologian says the phrase is stronger than simply "under Our protection". It is like telling someone: keep this before your eyes. The ark was not merely guarded. It was watched closely, continuously, with attention.

That reverses everything the ego believes about being seen. We chase the eyes of people because we feel invisible without them. The man in the most invisible position on earth, on a lonely ship in a drowned world, was the most closely watched being in creation.

It also shrinks our pride. The attention we crave from people is small, fickle and brief. Views fade by the next day. The gaze of Allah never wanders, never tires, never moves on to someone more interesting.

A sceptic might ask whether Allah's speaking of His own watchfulness is a demand to be admired. It is not. He is free of every need (35:15). Our awareness of His gaze adds nothing to Him. It is a gift to us: the end of the exhausting search for an audience.

The next time you catch yourself counting views, likes or compliments, picture the ark. Alone on the water, admired by no one, and safe. It is enough to be seen by Him.
