Al-Qamar 54:52

وَكُلُّ شَىْءٍ فَعَلُوهُ فِى ٱلزُّبُرِ

“And everything they did is in written records.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The written guarantee they hoped for did not exist; the written record they never wanted does, and every single thing they did is in it.

A reflection

A record kept by One who never forgets

A head of finance keeps a meticulous ledger. She is proud of it: every invoice logged, every payment matched. But she also knows why she keeps it. Her memory is not good enough. Without the ledger, she would forget, and so would everyone else.

The ayah describes a different kind of record. Every thing they did is in the zubur, the written books. One early commentator explains them as the books the recording angels write about each person. He adds that it may also mean the Mother of the Book. Another classical commentator links it to the noble recorders who know whatever you do (82:10–12).

The same commentator, discussing the next ayah, makes a striking point. A human writes an account mostly so that he will not forget. If a sum is huge, he may not bother to write it, because he could never forget it. Allah's record is not like ours. It is not kept against forgetting, for He does not forget. Small and great alike are written, for another purpose.

This is majesty, and it should quieten the ego. We keep records because our minds fail. He keeps them, though His knowledge never fails, so that justice can be seen and read. The Quran describes the moment: read your book; your own self is enough today as a reckoner against you (17:14).

Is this Allah boasting of His knowledge? He needs no one's admiration. The record is for us: to make the Day fair, transparent and beyond dispute.

The ego likes to keep its own selective ledger, generous to itself and strict with others. Tonight, before you sleep, keep an honest one for a minute. Name one thing you did today that you would not want read out. Ask Allah to erase it with forgiveness, while the page is still open.
