Al-Isra 17:14

ٱقْرَأْ كِتَـٰبَكَ كَفَىٰ بِنَفْسِكَ ٱلْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكَ حَسِيبًا

“[It will be said], "Read your record. Sufficient is yourself against you this Day as accountant."”

Saheeh International

Essence

On the Day you are handed your own record and told to read it; you alone are enough to add it up.

A reflection

The fairest judge you could have asked for

In a village cricket match, a batsman edges the ball faintly and the wicketkeeper catches it. The bowler appeals. The umpire hesitates; he did not hear the nick. Before he can decide, the batsman tucks his bat under his arm and walks off. He knew. Nobody in the ground argues with that decision, because it came from the only person who felt the ball touch the bat.

Iqraʾ kitābak, kafā bi-nafsika al-yawma ʿalayka ḥasībā: read your book; your own self is enough today as a reckoner against you. An early preacher of Basra used to say, whenever he recited it: by Allah, He has been fair to you. He made you the reckoner of your own self.

Consider what this removes. No hostile prosecutor. No witness you could accuse of malice. No clerk who might have misheard. One commentary paraphrases the divine voice: We seek no witness against you other than yourself, and no counter other than you. A narration-based commentary adds why this is final. You will know that you were not wronged, and that nothing was written against you except what you did. You will remember all of it.

A modern commentary calls it the greatest justice and fairness: to say to a servant, take your own account; you are enough for it.

This matters for anyone who suspects that judgement will be arbitrary. People fear being judged by someone who does not know them, or who has already made up his mind. The ayah describes the opposite. The evidence is in your own record, and the one adding it up is you.

It also means there will be no argument left. The batsman who walks cannot complain about the decision. The person who reads his own book cannot say it was forged.

And it leaves a quiet invitation for today. A reckoning that will be done by you, from your own record, can be practised by you now. The cricketer who walks on Saturday has been training his honesty all season. Sit with your own page tonight, before anyone asks you to.
