Ar-Rahman 55:37

فَإِذَا ٱنشَقَّتِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ فَكَانَتْ وَرْدَةً كَٱلدِّهَانِ

“And when the heaven is split open and becomes rose-colored like oil[1601] -”

Saheeh International

Essence

"When the sky is split and turns rose-red like oil..." and then the sentence stops, leaving the listener to imagine what no words could finish.

A reflection

The sentence that is never finished

Read this ayah slowly and you may notice something missing. It begins with "when": when the sky is split and becomes rose-red like oil. Then it ends. There is no "then". The sentence sets up a condition and never says what follows.

The commentaries noticed, and they agree this is deliberate.

One concise commentary supplies the missing words in a single phrase: then how immense the terror. A later commentary says the answer is left unspoken because it is something the power of description cannot carry. What happened, happened.

A classical commentary gives the reason most fully, with an analogy from ordinary speech. A man says: when the sultan is angry with so-and-so... and then falls silent, shaking his head. Every listener completes the sentence differently. One thinks: he will kill him. Another: he will seize everything he owns. Another imagines something worse. The silence does more than any ending could, because each listener supplies the worst thing he can picture.

That is the architecture of this ayah. The sky splits. It turns the colour of a rose, of red leather, of oil shimmering as it pours. And then the voice stops.

The listener is left standing in the gap. Whatever you imagine there is less than the reality, and the ayah knows it.

This is also why the refrain that follows hits so hard (55:38). The question "which of the favours of your Lord will you deny?" arrives into that silence. It fills the space where the answer should have been.

There is a lesson in how to read here. Do not hurry past the gap. When you recite this ayah, stop after the last word and let the unfinished sentence sit. Let your own mind supply the ending the ayah declined to give.

Then the refrain will come, and you will hear what it is answering.
