Al-Waqi'ah 56:12

فِى جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ

“In the Gardens of Pleasure,”

Saheeh International

Essence

Nearness came first, and only now a place: gardens that belong to bliss, named by a word that means covered.

A reflection

A garden, in Arabic, is a covered place

Say garden in English and most people see an open space. Lawn, borders, sky overhead. Something you look at.

The Arabic word is built on the opposite idea.

Janna al-shayʾa means to cover a thing. Whatever is screened from you has been janna from you. Night covers a traveller, and the Quran uses this verb for it. The jinn are named for being hidden from human eyes. The unborn child is a janīn, hidden in its mother. A shield is a junna, because it hides whoever carries it. The grave is janan, because it covers the dead, and the shroud carries the same name. Even the heart is called janān, hidden in the chest. Madness is junūn, what covers the mind.

And a janna is a garden whose trees grow so thick, their branches so interwoven, that they cover the ground and shade everything inside.

So you are not looking at this garden. You are under it.

Picture the difference. Walk into an old orchard that has not been pruned for fifty years and the branches close over the path. The light goes green. You cannot see the field you came from, and the field cannot see you. That is a janna, and the word says nothing about flowers.

One more detail from the lexicons makes the picture exact. When plants grew tall, tangled and flowering, the Arabs said the herbage had gone mad, using this same root. Growth that covers everything.

That reframes the whole promise, because the first thing the word gives you is not beauty. It is cover: shade, concealment, and a shield.

And it reframes the order of the ayat. The rank was named (56:10). Then nearness (56:11). Only now a place, and the place is described as a covering rather than a view.
