Al-An'am 6:134

إِنَّ مَا تُوعَدُونَ لَـَٔاتٍ ۖ وَمَآ أَنتُم بِمُعْجِزِينَ

“Indeed, what you are promised is coming, and you will not cause failure [to Allāh].[346]”

Saheeh International

Essence

What you have been promised is already on its way to you, and nobody outruns the One who sends it.

A reflection

Walkers on the sands as the tide turns

On a wide tidal bay, a group of walkers lingers too long on the sands. The light is lovely and the cockle beds are interesting. Then someone notices the channels filling. On such flats the tide can race in faster than people expect, filling the gullies behind them. The strongest walker cannot outpace it. Speed is simply not the question.

The ayah ends: and you are not muʿjizīn. The lexicons give the root a racing picture. ʿAjz is falling behind, then lacking the power to do a thing at all. In a race, aʿjaza is to outrun someone until he cannot catch you. So muʿjizīn are those who leave their pursuer helpless, unable to reach them. The ayah says you are not that.

One classical commentary notices the word chosen for what is coming: ātin, one who is coming, rather than a word meaning simply 'happening'. It pictures the promised thing as a swift pursuer, whom no fugitive escapes. The two halves of the ayah fit together. Something is coming, and you are not faster.

Here the ego has to shrink. Modern life trains us to believe that consequences can be outrun. Money buys lawyers. Speed buys distance. A clever enough person can always find a way out. Many have lived that way for years without being caught. The ayah quietly says: not from this.

A fair question remains. Does Allah need to chase anyone? Is this the language of a ruler anxious about rebels? Not at all. Fleeing Him is not a threat to Him. The ayah is not about His need to catch. It is about your inability to escape what is true, as the walkers cannot argue with the moon.

The wise walkers turn back early, while the sand is still firm. That is the only kind of speed that matters here.
