Al-An'am 6:135

“Say, "O my people, work according to your position; [for] indeed, I am working. And you are going to know who will have succession in the home.[347] Indeed, the wrongdoers will not succeed."”

Essence

Keep to your way with all your strength, and I will keep to mine; the end will show whose way was right.

A reflection

"O my people": a warning that does not slam the door

A father and his grown son argue late one night. The son is set on a path the father believes will ruin him. Voices rise. The son picks up his keys and heads for the door. The father does not shout after him. He says quietly: you are still my son. Do what you think best, and so will I. We will see where each road leads.

The ayah opens the same way: say, yā qawmi, O my people. These were the people who mocked the Prophet ﷺ, rejected his message and opposed him. Yet he is told to address them as his own. The tie is not cut, even as the warning is delivered.

One classical commentator admired this ayah for its manner. He called it a subtle way of warning, with fairness in speech and good courtesy. Yet it carries a severe threat, and complete confidence that the one warning is right. Another commentator notes the same fairness alongside the warning.

That combination is rare. People who are sure they are right often become harsh. People who are gentle often become unsure. The ayah holds both together. It does not water down the truth. It does not insult the listener either.

This is a lesson for every difficult conversation. With a relative who has left the faith. With a colleague whose choices you think are dangerous. With a friend drifting somewhere you cannot follow. You can be honest about where you stand without humiliating them. You can state the stakes without slamming the door.

The son drives away that night. Months later he calls. What he remembers is not the argument. It is the sentence at the door. The ayah teaches that the manner of a warning can be the reason it is one day heard.
