Al-An'am 6:2

“It is He who created you from clay and then decreed a term[291] and a specified time [known] to Him;[292] then [still] you are in dispute.”

Essence

You began as wet clay, you live inside a term already written, and another term waits with Him alone: so why still waver?

A reflection

A king's name in a thumb of clay

In a museum case sits a small lump of baked clay, no bigger than a thumb. Pressed into it is the seal of a king who ruled a city three thousand years ago. His palace is rubble and his bones are dust. The clay kept his name.

Ṭīn is earth mixed with water. One lexicon records that a piece of it was used to seal a deed. Another preserves the saying that Allah 'clayed' a person upon goodness, as if pressing His mark in. That is what this ayah says you are made from: wet earth, shaped and stamped by another hand.

It follows straight on from the heavens and the earth. One commentator notes the order. The proof from the horizons comes first, then the proof from the self, which lies closer to the one looking. Having shown you the sky, the ayah turns and shows you your own hands.

That is the end of pride, if we let it be. Whatever we polish about ourselves, the CV, the face, the family name, was mud before it was anything. The commentators explain that all people are addressed through the father who was formed from it. The ego wants a pedigree. The ayah supplies one: clay, and then a Maker.

Why tell us this? Does He need us small? He needs nothing from us. He tells us what we are so that we can put down a weight we were never built to carry. Clay that thinks it is a king is exhausting to be. Clay that knows whose seal it bears can rest.
