Al-An'am · Makki · ayah 61 of 165
Al-An'am 6:61
“And He is the subjugator over His servants, and He sends over you guardian-angels until, when death comes to one of you, Our messengers [i.e., angels of death] take him, and they do not fail [in their duties].”

Essence
Above every power stands One whom nothing withstands; He keeps you with tireless guardians until His messengers take you at the exact hour, without fault.
A reflection
Height is not the same as power
Wa-huwa al-qāhiru fawqa ʿibādih: He is the One who prevails, above His servants. The ayah does not argue the point. It states it, as a fact about the shape of reality.
The root of qāhir carries a vivid picture. The Arabs said meat was quhira when the fire took hold of it and its juices ran. The lexicons join two ideas in the word: overpowering, and bringing low, often in one act. It is a force the thing beneath it cannot resist.
One commentary makes a sharp observation. Being high in place does not by itself mean being in control. Whatever is raised up can still be overpowered.
Picture a man who bought the penthouse on the fortieth floor because it looked down on the whole city. One summer evening a power cut stops the lifts. For nine hours he cannot get down, and the taps run dry. At midnight a pensioner from the ground floor climbs the stairs with two bottles of water. The highest man in the building waits on the lowest.
Every human height is like that penthouse. The chief executive answers to the board, the board to the market, the strongest ruler to his own heartbeat. The ego climbs and imagines itself on top. The ayah tells it where the top really is.
Does a God who calls Himself al-Qāhir simply want to crush? Look at who is under the word: ʿibādihi, His servants, joined to Him by a possessive. Look at what the very next phrase says He does with His power. He sends guardians to keep them. The power nothing withstands is the same power that keeps you. For anyone crushed by human power, that is not a threat. It is news that the crusher, too, is beneath Someone.
