Al-An'am 6:72

وَأَنْ أَقِيمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَٱتَّقُوهُ ۚ وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِىٓ إِلَيْهِ تُحْشَرُونَ

“And to establish prayer and fear Him." And it is He to whom you will be gathered.”

Essence

After a sentence about submitting, the voice turns to face you: set the prayer upright, carry your shield, and know where every road ends.

A reflection

The sentence that turns to face you

Read the end of the previous ayah and the start of this one as a single breath. 'We have been commanded to submit to the Lord of the worlds, and: establish the prayer.' The first half is reported speech. It talks about a command. The second half is the command itself, spoken straight at you.

The grammarians noticed the seam. The smooth sentence would have kept one shape: commanded to submit, and to pray. Instead the wording breaks into a direct imperative in mid-flow. One classical reading gives a striking reason. Someone still outside faith is spoken about, like an absent stranger. Once he submits, he has stepped into the room, and now he is spoken to.

Picture a citizenship ceremony in a council chamber. For twenty minutes the official reads out procedure, referring to 'the applicant' in the third person. Forms, conditions, oaths. Then she steps down from the lectern, shakes one woman's hand, and says her name and 'welcome'. Same room, same words of law. But now she is being addressed, not described.

That is the turn in this ayah. Submission is the step inside. Prayer is the first thing said to your face once you are in.

It also tells you what prayer is. It is not a report you file about your faith. It is the moment you stop being discussed and start being spoken to. Five times a day the address comes again, face to face. The only question is whether you turn back towards it.
