Al-Jumu'ah 62:4

ذَٰلِكَ فَضْلُ ٱللَّهِ يُؤْتِيهِ مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ ذُو ٱلْفَضْلِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

“That is the bounty of Allāh, which He gives to whom He wills, and Allāh is the possessor of great bounty.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Guidance, a Messenger and a place among his people are not wages but overflow, from the One beside whose bounty every other gift looks small.

A reflection

Greatness with bones in it

A man whose terraced house tripled in value while he slept tells his nephew the secret is knowing when to buy. He did buy it. Everything after that happened to him, not by him. Most of us tell a version of this story about something.

The ayah closes on a description of Allah: dhū al-faḍl al-ʿaẓīm, the Possessor of great bounty. The lexicons trace ʿaẓīm to ʿaẓm, bone: the hard frame under the flesh that holds a body up. Greatness, in that picture, is structural, not swollen. The same root, turned on a creature, gives a word for puffing oneself up and playing big.

So the ayah sets two kinds of 'great' side by side, though only one is named. His greatness has bones in it. Ours, when we claim it, is usually air. The man with the house is not lying about the purchase. He is inflating his part in the overflow that followed.

One commentary calls this a bounty beside which every other giver's bounty grows small. Another says the blessings of this world and the next look slight before it. The bounty in view is guidance itself: a Messenger, a Book, a place among his people. None of it was earned. All of it was given.

Does Allah need to describe Himself as generous? Picture a guest at a feast who thanks the waiter and never asks who paid. The host loses nothing. The guest simply never meets him. Allah names Himself so that we know whose table we are at. The praise serves our bearings, not His supply.

The ego's work is to rename overflow as wages. The ayah's work is to name it back again. Dhālika faḍlu Allāh: that is Allah's bounty. The phrase is worth saying over anything you are tempted to take credit for.
