Al-Jumu'ah 62:10

“And when the prayer has been concluded, disperse within the land and seek from the bounty of Allāh, and remember Allāh often that you may succeed.”

Essence

The same prayer that stopped your trade now sends you back into it, carrying the remembrance of Allah out into the street.

A reflection

The mosque door opens outwards

A trainee nurse asks her mother whether her twelve-hour shifts count for anything religious. She prays, she fasts, she gives a little. But most of her waking life is spent changing dressings and chasing drug charts. It feels, she says, like time away from Allah.

Many Muslims carry that division without noticing it. Worship happens in the mosque, on the mat, in Ramadan. Work, shopping and the rest of life happen somewhere else. Friday, on this picture, is the hour when we visit Allah before going back to our real lives.

This ayah dissolves that picture. When the prayer is over, disperse in the land and seek from the bounty of Allah, and remember Allah much. The commentaries read the first two commands as a release: the trade set aside at the call is open again. One adds that whoever wishes may go, and whoever wishes may stay. But then comes a third command, and it is not a release. Remember Allah much.

One commentary notices that the remembrance of Allah appears twice across these two ayat. The first, the sermon and prayer, cannot be done while trading. The second is done while trading. It cites another ayah describing 'men whom neither trade nor sale distracts from the remembrance of Allah' (24:37). The market is not where faith stops. It is where the second kind of remembrance is tested.

So the nurse's shift is not time away from Allah, unless she makes it so. The ayah sends her out of the mosque with a bounty to seek and a remembrance to carry. The dressing changed gently, the patient spoken to with respect, a quiet bismillāh before a hard task: that is worship in the land.

The mosque door opens outwards. The prayer is not the end of the week's religion. It is where the week's religion is handed back to you, to carry.
