At-Talaq · Madani · ayah 3 of 12
At-Talaq 65:3
“And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allāh - then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allāh will accomplish His purpose. Allāh has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.”

Essence
Allah carries out His purpose whether you lean on Him or not; leaning on Him turns the same outcome into sufficiency, forgiveness and reward.
A reflection
His purpose arrives either way
Halfway through this ayah comes a sentence that steadies everything around it. Allah reaches His purpose, bālighu amrihi. Whatever He intends arrives, and nothing escapes Him.
An early teacher drew out what this means for the line before it. Allah carries out His purpose whether a person relies on Him or not. The difference is in the person. The one who relies on Him has his sins wiped away and his reward made great.
That is a humbling thought for the ego. We tend to feel, without saying it, that our worrying holds things together. If I stop checking, planning, lying awake, something will fall. Self-importance hides inside anxiety. It assumes the outcome is waiting on me.
The ayah quietly removes that weight. The outcome was never waiting on you. His purpose will reach its mark. What is still open is how you will stand while it does. You can strain against it, or you can lean on Him and be rewarded for leaning.
A classical spiritual writer says trust grows from two kinds of knowledge together. The first is that the servant owns nothing at all. The second is that every matter is in Allah's hand and returns to Him. When both are truly known, reliance is no longer an effort. There is simply nowhere else to put your weight.
The Prophet ﷺ taught a young cousin the same truth. If the whole community gathered to benefit you, they could not, except with what Allah had written for you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried (Jamiʿ al-Tirmidhi, graded ṣaḥīḥ).
