At-Talaq 65:5

“That is the command of Allāh, which He has sent down to you; and whoever fears Allāh - He will remove for him his misdeeds and make great for him his reward.”

Essence

The rules of an ending marriage are called the command of Allah, sent down to you, and keeping them covers sins and enlarges reward.

A reflection

The command that descends through the heavens

The ayah begins with one word pointing back at everything before it: dhālika, that. That is the command of Allah, which He sent down to you.

Arabic has a near word for 'this' and a far word for 'that'. One classical commentary notes that the far word is used here on purpose. It signals how high these rulings stand in rank. The timing of a divorce, the counted waiting, the house a wife must not be pushed from. All of it is lifted and called amr Allāh, the command of Allah.

Now follow the verb to the surah's end. Allah created seven heavens and of the earth the like of them. The command descends between them, yatanazzalu al-amr, so that you may know Allah has power over all things (65:12).

The same command that moves through the seven heavens has been sent down to you. Into one household, in its worst season. Into a kitchen where two people are no longer speaking.

This is a direct challenge to the ego. In a divorce the ego says: this is my house, my money, my pride, my story to tell. Arrogance treats the rules as negotiable, something to bend once the lawyers are involved. The ayah answers with majesty. This is not your private arrangement. It is His command, and it came down to you by name.

There is comfort here too. The Lord who governs the heavens has not left the smallest corner of a broken home without guidance. He saw this kitchen coming, and sent word ahead.
