Al-Muzzammil 73:2
قُمِ ٱلَّيْلَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا
“Arise [to pray] the night, except for a little -”
Saheeh International
Essence
Stand through the night, save a little for rest: an invitation into the hours when the King of all calls out for anyone asking.
A reflection
The King calls out at night
Qum al-layl. Stand through the night. Read alone, it can sound like a demand for endurance. Read beside a hadith, it sounds like an invitation to an audience.
The Prophet ﷺ said: our Lord, blessed and exalted, descends every night to the lowest heaven when the last third of the night remains. He says: who is calling on Me, that I may answer him? Who is asking of Me, that I may give him? Who is seeking My forgiveness, that I may forgive him (Sahih al-Bukhari)?
A classical commentary quotes another version in which He begins by saying: I am the King, I am the King. Then the same three questions.
Think about how people behave around power. If a head of state offered a private audience at three in the morning, few would sleep through it. We rearrange our lives for interviews, flights, deadlines set by people who will forget us in a year. Yet the King of the heavens and the earth calls out every night, and most of the world is asleep.
That is a hard mirror for the ego. Self-importance tells us our time is precious, our sleep non-negotiable, our schedule too full. The ayah answers with majesty. The One who owns the night is offering it back to you, hour by hour, with a question attached. Who is asking?
The command to stand is, at its heart, a command to be awake when He is calling. Nothing in the day compares with what is on offer then.
