Al-Qiyamah 75:14

بَلِ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ عَلَىٰ نَفْسِهِۦ بَصِيرَةٌ

“Rather, man, against himself, will be a witness,[1804]”

Saheeh International

Essence

You will not need anyone to tell you what you did: you were there, and the evidence has been on you all along.

A reflection

Not a slogan about knowing your own heart

There is a way of quoting this ayah that turns it upside down. 'Man knows himself best,' people say. Only I can judge my own heart. It sounds humble and private, and it ends most conversations.

Read the words again: 'Rather, the human being is, against himself, clear evidence'. The small word ʿalā matters. A witness ʿalā someone testifies against them. One classical commentary notes that this preposition signals evidence of wrongdoing. The ayah is not complimenting our self-knowledge. It is serving a summons.

Then notice bal, 'rather'. The previous ayah said the human being will be informed of what he sent ahead and held back. This one goes further. He hardly needs informing, the commentators explain. He was present for all of it, and part of him has always known.

An early voice adds a sharp twist. The ayah, he said, describes someone who sees other people's faults clearly and is ignorant of his own. So the insight exists. It is simply pointed the wrong way.

A woman's brother tries, carefully, to raise something she said to their mother. She cuts him off: 'Only Allah knows my heart'. It is true. It is also a door shut in his face. She uses the truth that Allah sees everything as a reason for nobody else to say anything.

This ayah reverses that move. Yes, you know your own heart better than anyone on earth. That is exactly why the excuse will not hold. The one who knows the most is the one with the least room to plead ignorance.
