Al-Insan 76:19

“There will circulate among them young boys made eternal. When you see them, you would think them [as beautiful as] scattered pearls.”

Essence

The Garden's servers look like pearls flung at a wedding: the Quran's word for scattered dust, turned into scattered light.

A reflection

Pearls thrown at a wedding

Manthūr is not a neutral word for 'scattered'. The lexicons explain that nathr is throwing things so they land spread out. Grain sown by hand, dates shaken from a cluster, nuts and sugar tossed over people at a celebration.

So when the first hearers met luʾluʾan manthūrā, scattered pearls, they did not picture a jewellery box knocked over. They pictured the moment at a celebration when handfuls are flung into the air, and everything glitters as it falls.

The commentaries kept that picture alive. Two of them record a scene from a later age. On the night of a caliph's wedding, the women of the palace scattered pearls over a carpet woven with gold. The caliph looked down at them lying there and was so struck that he quoted a poet's line about pearls on a floor of gold. The commentators set the scene beside this ayah, as if to say: imagine that, and then imagine the Garden.

At a wedding in east London, the bride's aunts stand on chairs as the groom arrives. They throw handfuls of coins and wrapped sweets over him. Children dive for them between the legs of the guests. For a few seconds the hall is full of falling, flashing things, and everybody laughs.

That is the feeling the ayah carries. See those who serve in the Garden moving among its people, and you would think pearls had been thrown at a wedding.

One commentator remarks that no simile could be finer, and no sight finer than pearls scattered over a beautiful place. And notice what it quietly tells us about the Garden as a whole. It is not a waiting room or a retirement. It is a celebration, and the celebration does not end.
