Al-Insan 76:20

وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَ ثَمَّ رَأَيْتَ نَعِيمًا وَمُلْكًا كَبِيرًا

“And when you look there [in Paradise], you will see pleasure and great dominion.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Wherever the eye falls there, it finds only bliss and a great kingdom, given by the King to people who owned almost nothing here.

A reflection

'Are You mocking me, when You are the King?'

The Prophet ﷺ described the last man to leave the Fire and the last to enter the Garden. He comes out crawling. Allah tells him to go in. He goes, and it seems full, so he comes back: My Lord, I found it full. Twice this happens. Then Allah tells him he has the like of this world, and ten times over. The man says: Are You mocking me, when You are the King? The Prophet ﷺ laughed until his back teeth showed. That, it was said, is the lowest in rank of the people of the Garden (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).

Hold that beside this ayah. 'When you look there, you see bliss and a great kingdom'. One commentary reads it plainly: a great kingdom belonging to Allah there, and a dazzling authority. Others say each of its people is given a kingdom. Both are true at once. The kingdoms are real, and they are His to give.

Now look at the kingdoms we build here. A corner office. A follower count. A street where people know our car. The ego grows on these, and guards them anxiously, because they are small and can be taken. The man in the hadith is given ten worlds, and his first thought is that he must be the butt of a joke. He cannot believe the King would be so generous to him.

Someone may ask why Allah describes such kingdoms, and His own kingship. Does He need us to admire His generosity? He is al-Ghanī, free of all need (35:15). Nothing we feel adds to Him. The greatness is shown so that we stop clutching at our own small thrones. Pride, in us, is a lie about our size. In Him, greatness is simply the truth.

The humble response is the man's own astonishment. You are the King. Everything else is a gift.
