At-Takwir 81:2
وَإِذَا ٱلنُّجُومُ ٱنكَدَرَتْ
“And when the stars fall, dispersing,”
Saheeh International
Essence
The stars that travellers steered by and debts were timed by will pour down like a stooping falcon; only their Lord was ever fixed.
A reflection
A certificate for a star
Online, you can pay to 'name a star' after someone you love. A framed certificate arrives with coordinates and a chosen name printed in gold. It is sold as a gift that lasts for ever: whatever happens down here, up there a light carries your name.
The instinct behind it is old and very human. We want our names fastened to something that does not move. For most of history, nothing seemed to move less than the stars. Caravans crossed the desert by them and ships crossed the sea by them (6:97). Farmers read the seasons in their risings. They were the one fixed ceiling over every generation.
This ayah takes that ceiling down. Inkadarat: the stars pour down, scatter and fall. The Arabic word is used of a falcon folding its wings and dropping on its prey. What looked like the most permanent thing in creation turns out to be as movable as anything else.
The star-naming certificate is a small, gentle vanity, and most of us have some version of it. The building with our name on it. The account we hope outlives us. The reputation we polish as if it were a fixed point in the sky. The ego leans on permanence it borrows from creation, and creation cannot lend what it does not have.
Only One does not change. The stars were never self-standing; they are made subject to His command (7:54). Every one of them, named by a gift shop or by no one, already bows. 'The sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees and the animals' prostrate to Him (22:18).
Does He need our awe, when the stars already bow? He does not. That is exactly the point. Your praise adds nothing to a Lord whom the whole sky already glorifies. It is for you. It fastens your name, at last, to the only One who will still be there when the stars have fallen.
