At-Takwir 81:21
مُّطَاعٍ ثَمَّ أَمِينٍ
“Obeyed there [in the heavens] and trustworthy.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Obeyed in the heavens and trusted with every word: authority that lasts is authority that was first trustworthy.
A reflection
Strong, trusted, and given a place
A small community charity needs a new treasurer. Two volunteers are willing. One has an impressive finance career and a confident manner. The other is a quiet retired postman. For six years he has counted the Friday collection and pinned the figures on the noticeboard to the penny. The committee chooses the postman, and nobody who knows the charity is surprised.
A classical scholar noticed that Jibrīl is described with qualities that appear together elsewhere. They come from people choosing whom to trust. When the king of Egypt appointed Yūsuf (as), he said: 'Today you are with us firmly placed, trusted', makīn amīn (12:54). A daughter in Madyan recommended Mūsā (as) to her father: 'The best one to hire is the strong, the trustworthy' (28:26).
Here those words gather in one being. Jibrīl is strong (81:20), firmly placed (81:20), obeyed and trustworthy (81:21). The scholar concludes that these are exactly the qualities anyone looks for when sending someone on a matter of great weight.
The order matters too. Strength without trustworthiness is dangerous; trustworthiness without strength cannot carry the load. Standing without either is a title on a door. Only together do they make someone worth obeying.
This is a checklist for anyone hiring, delegating or electing. The question is not who is most impressive. It is who is strong enough for this, and whom we can trust with it unobserved. It is also a mirror for anyone who wants to lead. People may obey a title for a while. They obey trustworthiness for years.
Jibrīl is 'obeyed there' because he is 'trustworthy'. The first follows from the second. That is the only kind of authority that lasts.
