At-Takwir 81:29

وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

“And you do not will except that Allāh wills - Lord of the worlds.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Your will is real, yet even the wanting to go straight is a gift from the Lord of the worlds, so ask Him for it.

A reflection

Even the wanting is a gift

An early report, recorded by the commentators, describes what happened when the previous ayah was recited. Abū Jahl, the fiercest opponent of the message in Makkah, heard 'for whoever among you wills to go straight' and seized on it. 'The matter is ours, then. If we wish, we go straight; if we wish, we do not'. The report says this ayah came in answer: 'And you do not will unless Allah wills, the Lord of the worlds'.

His claim is a very old kind of pride: the belief that my goodness is my own achievement. It survives in quieter forms among believers too.

Picture a man who has prayed every prayer in the mosque for twenty years. His younger brother has not prayed since school. Privately, the older one has always put it down to discipline: I made the effort, he did not. Then one winter, after a bereavement, the younger brother turns up at dawn prayer and keeps coming. Nothing the older one said caused it. He begins to wonder whose gift his own twenty years had been.

The ayah does not deny human will; the previous one affirmed it. It sets that will inside a greater one. You will, but only because Allah wills that you will. The commentators explain it that way: even your wanting to go straight comes by His will.

Is that Allah guarding His own importance? He gains nothing from our obedience and loses nothing by our refusal. Telling us the truth about where our goodness comes from is for our sake. It removes the one thing that can spoil good deeds from inside: self-admiration, the ego quietly taking credit.

The surah that began with the sun wound up ends here, with the Lord of the worlds. Every achievement is something He allowed to happen. That is not humiliating. It frees us to be grateful instead of proud.
