At-Takwir 81:4

وَإِذَا ٱلْعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتْ

“And when full-term she-camels[1865] are neglected”

Saheeh International

Essence

The Arab's most prized possession, a camel days from giving birth, will be left untended; no one will glance at their best asset.

A reflection

The night the portfolio peaked

A young trader has watched one investment for three years. He checks it before breakfast and again in bed. One night it reaches the highest value it has ever had. He does not see it. He is on a trolley in A&E with chest pains, and his phone stays face down in his coat for six hours. When he finally looks, the number means almost nothing.

The ʿishār were the first hearers' version of that portfolio. They were she-camels ten months pregnant, days from giving birth. One animal was about to become two, with milk to follow. The commentators say there was no wealth the Arabs loved more. Owners stayed close behind them, watching, waiting for the birth.

On that Day they are ʿuṭṭilat: left untended, unmilked, with no herdsman. Not because they have lost value, but because their owners have lost interest. One commentator draws the conclusion. If the most coveted wealth is abandoned from the sheer terror of that hour, imagine what happens to everything else.

Some read this as a scene just before the Hour, when people are too shaken to tend their herds. Others read it as a parable of the Day itself. If anyone had such a camel then, he would leave it and think only of himself. Either way the point is the same. The value we give things depends on a world that is about to stop.

Why speak of camels to people who may never have seen one? Because the first hearers' wealth was mostly camels, the commentators explain, so the Quran spoke in their currency. Translate it into yours. The share options about to vest. The house nearly paid off. The business one signature from a sale. On that Day, the Quran says elsewhere, neither wealth nor children will help. Only 'the one who comes to Allah with a sound heart' is helped (26:88–89).

The trader in A&E learned it in one night. The ayah invites us to learn it earlier, while the asset can still be turned into something that travels with us.
