Al-Infitar 82:1
إِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ ٱنفَطَرَتْ
“When the sky breaks apart”
Saheeh International
Essence
The sky no one has ever found a crack in will split at one word from the One who first split it open.
A reflection
Look again: can you find a crack?
The Quran once sets its reader a challenge. Look at the sky, it says, and turn your gaze back to see if you can find a single crack. Then look again, and again, and 'your sight will come back to you humbled and weary' (67:3–4). The word for cracks there is fuṭūr. It comes from the same root as infaṭarat, the verb of this ayah.
So the surah opens on the very event that challenge was waiting for. The one ceiling in which no eye has found a flaw splits open. Not from age, and not from strain. It splits because its Lord commands it.
Now think of what we are proud of building. A developer unveils a glass tower on the waterfront, and his name goes on the lobby wall in brushed steel. By its second winter, scaffolding is up and cracked panels are being replaced one by one. Our best work cracks without being told to. His work waits for a word.
The sources give two pictures of the splitting. The sky opens so that the angels can descend, as another ayah says (25:25). Or it bursts 'from the awe of Allah'. The Quran shows how near that awe already is. At the claim that the Merciful has taken a son, 'the heavens almost burst apart' (19:90). The verb, yatafaṭṭarna, is again from this root. The sky nearly breaks at one proud lie told about its Lord. We tell small proud lies about ourselves every day, and assume nothing will ever crack.
Someone may ask whether this is power on display: a God breaking His own sky to impress us. But He needs no audience. 'O people, you are the ones in need of Allah, and Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy' (35:15). Sahih Muslim reports Him saying that if every creature had the most devout heart, it would add nothing to His kingdom.
And look at what the Quran says about the sky before it splits. He 'holds back the sky from falling on the earth, except by His leave; truly Allah is Kind and Merciful to people' (22:65). Every night it stayed up was kindness. The ego forgets that it lives under a roof held up by mercy.
