Al-Infitar 82:6

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ مَا غَرَّكَ بِرَبِّكَ ٱلْكَرِيمِ

“O mankind, what has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Generous,”

Saheeh International

Essence

After the sky splits, one voice turns to you alone: what fooled you about a Lord whose generosity should have drawn you nearer?

A reflection

The Generous is also the Great

The sky has split, the stars have scattered, the seas have burst and the graves are empty. You expect a verdict. Instead, for the first time in the surah, the voice turns and speaks to you. Yā ayyuhā al-insān: O human being. What has deluded you concerning your Lord, the Generous?

Notice the name. Not the Mighty, not the Avenger. Al-Karīm. The Arabs saw karam wherever a thing gave its best. A cloud karuma when it brought rain. Good soil was generous to the seed. The grapevine was karm: its clusters hang low within reach, it carries much good, and it has no thorns. Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim report that the Prophet ﷺ said the true karm is the heart of the believer.

But the classical sources insist that the name here is not soft. One glosses al-Karīm in this ayah simply as 'the Great'. Another describes the karīm as the noble master whose word is obeyed. Such a master is the last one it makes sense to take lightly, or whose rights one neglects. Generosity on that scale is a form of majesty.

The ego reads it the other way. The owner of a small florist's shop pays her staff in full, even when they are late. Within a year, half of them drift in at ten. They had mistaken her kindness for not caring. An old saying recorded in the sources puts it bluntly: part of a man's generosity is the bad manners of his servants.

We do this to Allah daily. He gives before we ask. He covers what He could expose. He delays what He could hasten. And the ego concludes that nothing is at stake.

Someone may ask whether this question is wounded pride. If He needs nothing, why ask us anything at all? The Quran answers directly: 'If you are ungrateful, Allah is free of need of you, yet He does not approve ingratitude for His servants. If you are grateful, He approves it for you' (39:7). The question does not protect His honour. It protects yours. Only a Generous Lord asks you why you left, while there is still time to come back.
