Al-Balad · Makki · ayah 2 of 20

Al-Balad 90:2

وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ

“And you, [O Muḥammad], are free of restriction in this city –”

Saheeh International

Essence

In the valley where even a bird was safe, only his life was fair game, and the oath promised the city would open to him.

A reflection

Safe for a bird, not for him

The Makkans took their sanctuary seriously. Inside its bounds they would not kill a bird or startle game. They would not cut a thorn bush. Bird, beast and even a wrongdoer on the run were left in peace there.

One early explanation of this ayah reads ḥill against that background. They held it unlawful to kill game or cut a tree in this city. Yet they held it lawful to drive you out and kill you. The one person in the valley treated as fair game was the one Allah had honoured most.

The commentators saw two purposes in saying so. It steadied the Prophet ﷺ, and urged him to bear what he was enduring from his own people. And it held their behaviour up for wonder. How can people be so careful with a tree and so careless with a man?

The pattern has not died. Picture a mosque committee spending an hour on whether children may run on the new carpet. Nobody notices the widow at the back who came to ask for help with her rent. The carpet is protected. The person is not.

There are two ways to read yourself into this ayah.

If you are the one treated as fair game, this is for you. Perhaps you are the family member everyone may mock, or the colleague whose feelings don't count. Allah swore by the city in the same breath as He named the one it wronged. Being disregarded by people is not the same as being disregarded by Him. The Prophet ﷺ was the most dishonoured man in Makkah in its people's eyes. He was the reason it was sworn by.

If you are part of the community, the question is sharper. Which rules do we keep with care, while someone near us is quietly made lawful prey? It is possible to guard every sacred symbol and still fail the human being standing next to it.

The Makkans never saw the contradiction. That is the frightening part. It is always easier to see in someone else's valley.
