لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ
“I swear by this city [i.e., Makkah] –”
Saheeh International
Essence
The surah opens with a jolt, 'No, I swear', then swears by a bare valley of rock honoured only by what Allah placed there.
A reflection
A valley with nothing in it
Picture a Year 9 geography class shown two photographs side by side. One is a river delta crowded with fields and farms. The other is a narrow valley of grey rock with no river at all. 'Which of these became a city that millions travel to every year?' Hands go up for the delta. The teacher shakes her head.
The commentators agree that al-balad here is Makkah. Its founder described it without flattery. Ibrāhīm (as) called it 'a valley without cultivation' (14:37). No trade route would have chosen it, and no king would have built a capital there.
Yet the surah opens by swearing by it. What makes a bare valley worth an oath? The classical answers are not about its stones. Allah made it a sanctuary: 'whoever enters it is safe' (3:97). He made its mosque the direction believers face in prayer, east and west (2:144). He called people to it 'from every deep ravine' (22:27). It is the one place on earth every able believer is asked to travel to.
So the honour of this balad was given, not grown. Nothing about the valley was impressive except what Allah placed there.
There is a quiet message in this for anyone who feels unimpressive. A life can look like that valley: few resources, little growing, hemmed in on every side. Worth is not measured by what shows on the surface. It comes from what Allah chooses to place in a person, and from which way that person faces.
Notice the small word hādhā, 'this'. Allah does not swear by 'a city'. He points. The first listeners were standing in it, among rocks they walked past every morning. The oath reached them where they lived.
Sometimes what Allah wants you to notice is not far away. It is the ground under your feet, and the ordinary place you have stopped seeing.
