“And believes in the best [reward].”

Saheeh International

Essence

Behind every open hand stands a confirmed belief: that the best is real, and that nothing given for Him is ever lost.

A reflection

The coffee board in a bad month

A small café has a board by the till. Customers can pay for an extra coffee and leave a paper slip pinned there, for anyone who cannot afford one. In a bad month the owner's accountant suggests she quietly take the board down. She leaves it up. 'If I stop believing it comes back,' she says, 'I'll have lost more than the coffee'.

The first road had two verbs: he gave, and he guarded himself. Now a third, and it sits underneath the other two. 'And confirmed the best'. Giving is an act of the hand. This is an act of the heart, and the hand depends on it. People do not let go of what they hold until they believe in something better.

Why would God want our belief? He does not need it. 'Whoever strives, strives only for himself; Allah is free of need of all the worlds' (29:6). The belief changes the believer. A person who is sure the best is real can loosen his grip on everything less. A person who is not must clutch whatever he has, because it is all he will ever have.

Much modern anxiety lives exactly there: in the fear that there is not enough, and never will be. Money, time and love all feel scarce. People hoard and still feel poor. The Quran's answer is not a budgeting tip. It is a belief to confirm: that Allah keeps His promises, and that nothing given for Him disappears.

That belief is a gift to the one who holds it. It lets you sleep after giving. It lets you leave the board up. 'Truly, in the remembrance of Allah hearts find rest' (13:28). Confirming the best is one of the ways the heart remembers who is holding the account.
