You were found, the way a lost traveller is found, and shown the road you could not have found alone.
A reflection
Water lost in milk
Many of us hear wa-wajadaka ḍāllan fa-hadā as a conversion story: he was lost, then he was guided, once, the way a person finds religion. Then we either flinch at the word 'lost' or hurry past it.
The classical commentators slowed down instead. One of them gathered the readings of ḍāllan and found many. Unaware of the scripture. Searching. Bewildered. Even loving, as when Yaʿqūb (as) is told that his love for Yūsuf (as) is his old ḍalāl (12:95). Then he said: all of these are good.
One reading would have reached the first hearers through a kitchen picture. The Arabs said ḍalla al-māʾu fī al-laban: the water was lost in the milk. Pour water into milk and it disappears, mixed in, impossible to pick out. On this reading, He found you submerged among a people who had lost their way, indistinguishable to the eye. Then He drew you out and made you distinct.
That is a different lostness from rebellion. It is the lostness of being surrounded, of having no visible shape of your own yet.
Picture a young man, the only practising Muslim on an offshore rig crew. Eight months in, he blends in so well that he has started to wonder who he is. Then a new engineer asks him, quietly, where he goes for ten minutes at sunset.
Guidance, in this picture, is not only being shown a road. It is being drawn out of the milk, so that you are yourself again.
