Saba 34:50
“Say, "If I should err, I would only err against myself. But if I am guided, it is by what my Lord reveals to me. Indeed, He is Hearing and near."”
Saheeh International
Essence
My straying is mine and harms me; my guidance is His gift by revelation; and He hears every word, and is near.
A reflection
Even his rightness was a gift
Read the two halves side by side and something seems off balance. The first says: if I go astray, I go astray only against myself. The matching half ought to run: and if I am guided, it is for myself. Instead it says: if I am guided, it is by what my Lord reveals to me.
The commentators noticed the tilt and explained it. Every harm the self suffers comes from the self and lands on it. Every good it reaches comes by its Lord's guidance and help. So the sentence gives each thing to its true owner. The loss is mine. The light is His.
Now notice who is told to say this. Not a struggling believer, but the Messenger ﷺ himself, the most rightly guided human being who ever lived. One classical reading draws the conclusion plainly. If he, with his rank and his straight path, stands under this rule, everyone else stands under it more surely.
That is where the ego shrinks. We like to keep two ledgers. Our successes go under talent, discipline and good judgement. Our failures go under bad luck, other people and the system. This ayah swaps both columns at once.
Picture a literary translator at an awards dinner. Her version of a long foreign novel has just won the prize. She holds the trophy for a moment and says: the author did the hard part; I only tried not to get in the way. Then she adds that every clumsy sentence in the book is hers alone. The room laughs, but she means it.
That is a small human echo of a far greater truth. Even the clearest mind does not generate its own guidance. It receives it.
Allah needs no one's acknowledgement of this. He is not enlarged by our thanks, nor diminished by our pride. It is we who are made sane by it. We are freed from the exhausting work of being our own source, and from the vanity that comes with pretending to be.
