Al-Isra · Makki · ayah 111 of 111
Al-Isra 17:111
“And say, "Praise to Allāh, who has not taken a son and has had no partner in [His] dominion and has no [need of a] protector out of weakness; and glorify Him with [great] glorification."”

Essence
The surah that opened with His glory closes by praising Him for what He has never needed: a son, a partner, a protector.
A reflection
The king is the weakest piece on the board
A chess coach sets out the pieces for a seven-year-old. This is the king, she says. He is the most important piece, and one of the weakest. He moves one square at a time. Most of the game is spent protecting him.
Every human throne is a chess king. Look at what rulers have always needed. An heir, so the power outlives them. Partners, because nobody can hold everything alone. And protectors: guards, allies, someone stronger to lean on when the threat comes.
This ayah names those three needs and removes each one from Allah. Lam yattakhidh waladan: He has taken no son. Wa-lam yakun lahu sharīkun fī l-mulk: no partner in His dominion. Wa-lam yakun lahu waliyyun mina l-dhull: no protector out of weakness. One early commentator reads them as a chain. Whoever has a son is a parent with a successor, not the Lord of lords. Whoever needs a partner cannot manage alone. Whoever needs an ally out of weakness is abased, and the abased are not gods to be obeyed.
Now turn the board round. My own small kingdom runs on those same three needs. I want children to carry my name. I want shares in things, a seat at the table. I want people with influence who will speak for me. None of that is wrong. But it shows what I am: a king who moves one square, guarded on every side.
This is where pride shrinks. He has none of the three. Nothing guards Him; He guards everything.
Someone may object. If He needs nothing, why does the ayah command us to praise Him and magnify Him? Is that not the very need it denies? Sahih Muslim records the answer in His own words. O My servants, you will never reach harming Me, nor reach benefiting Me. The praise does not prop Him up. He needs no protector, and He needs no applause. The words are given to you, to say who He is, and so to learn who you are.
